Catren's Shar-Pei is located in the heart of the Ozarks, right off I-44 in Marshfield, Missouri (30 miles east of Springfield, MO). Together with my parents, we live on 240 acres of wonderful cattle grazing land. Throughout the years, my shar-pei were able to run the farm with freedom, but as so often happens when their value increases, they now go on supervised outings (where they can't chase the calves or be chased by the cows) as often as we can. Plans are in the works to fence in approximately 1 to 2 acres that will allow them the freedom to run "wild!"

The History of Catren's catren's catren's shar-pei shar-pei shar-pei Shar-Pei chinese shar-pei puppies dogs shar-pei for sale catren's shar-pei shar pei puppies dogs show dogs

I received my first shar-pei in 1988. While visiting a kennel with a friend, I expressed the desire to have a Shar-Pei, although I had no money to purchase one, but enough love and money to care for one. The kennel owner recognized that I could give a dog a good home, and told me that she had a puppy at the veterinarian that had received the wrong ringer under the skin for being dehydrated and would need nursing back to health and would I be interested? I almost fell off my chair rushing to the veterinarian's, and grabbed the puppy up before she could change her mind. Thus, the first Shar-Pei ever for Catren's was acquired.

Catren's Cher-Ri was not gorgeous; she was a bone-mouth, light boned horse coat girl that had too long of legs and very little breed type, BUT I loved her. Meanwhile, my mother (who could always recognize and pick the best quality) had fallen in love with a fawn horse coat girl at this same kennel. After much negotiating and talking, Valmer's Mi-Ti Gon, a Sur Du Bang granddaughter, came home. Now here was a true Shar-Pei from the word go! Little did I know that Mi-Ti would produce the foundation bitch for Catren's, Catren's Cim-A-Ron Cin-Dee.

Chinese Shar-Pei were not the first animals that my parents and I have bred. My mother started with Poodles when I was 8 years old, and I practically grew up in the show ring showing them for her.

When asked why she kept putting her dogs with a child when they could be winning with an adult, she replied "Because I enjoy seeing my daughter showing and winning." With my mom's confidence behind me, I became a Junior Handler and handled Valmer's Sweet Charity to her Championship as a Junior. This was unheard of in the Toy Poodle ring, but soon the professional handlers learned that I was as professional as them, and they grew to respect me.

My mother taught me a lot about breeding animals through watching her in trial and error, and listening when the older Poodle breeders talked to her. We also had a wonderful veterinarian that took the time to talk breeding programs and genetics with a teenager. I further had the opportunity to apply my knowledge in our Nubian Goat herd, and later with the Montadale Sheep, Boer Goat, and Limousine (now Angus) cattle herd. The one thing that has survived through our entire animal breeding history is "To get the best, you have to breed the best." Not only are pedigrees and genetics researched for our breeding program, but the Shar-Pei have to match in their physical type to be able to produce Champions, wonderful pets, and companions. Here at Catren's, this is what I am continuously striving to do. Because of this, I believe that I am producing healthy animals that will live to their full potential.
